Overcoming
Challenges: Just Part of the Journey
ASCAP
Artist H-II Stephen Michael Apatow expressed his
deepest appreciation for the excellent care and follow-up treatment
provided by the Yale head and Neck Group
at the Yale Cancer Center. Earlier this month, continued progress
pushed his next follow-up
appointment out one year. His physician, Dr. Clarence T. Sasaki,
MD,
is Director of the Head and Neck Tumor Board, and Charles W. Ohse
Professor of Surgery and the Chief of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck
Surgery at the Yale School of Medicine.
As a
music artist, and vocalist, this challenge presented a
transformative test regarding treatment and recovery, with an objective
of full function of the vocal apparatus. The sensitivity of the
Yale team
and treatment approach optimized the surgical, radiological and
chemotherapy modalities accordingly. Thanks to their treatment
approach, 3 months
into chemo-radiation, with continued vocal training, Stephen was able
to
record and produce the soundtrack "The
American Way,"
(AirPlay Direct) that was included in the album "Country
Goes Global"
(iTunes) that was released in November 2010 (in
conjunction with the completion of treatment):
As founder of the Humanitarian Resource Institute
(UN:NGO:DESA) and United Nations
Arts Initiative, this life changing
experience has led to the
formation of the Never
Give Up:
Cancer Advocacy and Education Project (uNeverGiveUp.org).
Today, advocacy efforts continue to spotlight this serious global
non-communicable disease challenge and tremendous resources available
through the Yale Cancer Center.
His
latest initiative, "The
Nessun Dorma Project," was developed in
support of "Arts
Integration Into Education," Humanitarian Relief and Development
through the United Nations Arts Initiative:
The
historic level of
desperation, for relief operations in 193 UN
member countries, has prompted a call to artists with the innovation,
creativity and a connection with the grassroots
level,
to lead U.S. and international humanitarian relief efforts.
"Arts
Integration Into Education," through the "United Nations Arts
Initiative" provides a
unique opportunity for members of the arts community to impact
prioritized humanitarian emergencies and relief operations across
the globe. Efforts to "Bridge Unmet Needs to Untapped
Resources,"
includes participation with strategic planning, critical
analysis,
expert think tank development for background discussions, peer reviewed
data compilation and communications that engage decision makers and
target audiences on the grassroots level in 193 United Nations
member countries.
The
UN NGO Humanitarian Resource Institute is the support system for these
efforts and looks forward to the advancement of grassroots education,
policy development and relief efforts across the globe.
